Santa Marta's Sierra Nevada Natural National Park is one of the protected areas of Colombia's National Natural Parks system and the second oldest, created in 1964. It is located between the departments of La Guajira, Magdalena and Cesar within the system. Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Declared by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site in 1979, it is considered a unique place in the world due to the isolation of the Andes and its highest peak (5775 meters above sea level) just 42 km from the sea. It contains all the thermal floors found in the Colombian territory, as well as the different biomes that make up the forest, the mountain forest and the Andean marshes.

Similarly, some 30,000 Aboriginal people from various tribes are part of the park, including the Koguis and Arhuacos, who have managed to resist European penetration. In 1973, the Serra Archaeological Project was carried out, which resulted in the discovery of the Lost City, located within the park and witnesses one of the oldest cultures in the country, the Tayrona. Unfortunately, the park was seriously threatened by illicit cultivation and clearing of mountain slopes.

The park has a wide variety of wildlife, consisting of bird, mammal, fish and insect species. 628 bird species, 120 mammals and 142 amphibians and reptiles were detected.
