The real altitude of the Serra da Estrela, at its summit, the Tower, is 1993 m.
The highest point, the Tower, is located in the municipality of Seia, Guarda district. Also in the municipality of Seia is located the Ski Resort Vodafone, the only ski resort in Portugal, developing the same on the slopes of the mountain that belong to the parish of Loriga. The lowest temperatures in Portugal are recorded in the Serra summit, with minimum temperatures reaching -20 ° C in winter.
Serra da Estrela is the name given to the mountain chain and to the Serra, where the highest elevation in mainland Portugal is found, and the second largest in Portuguese territory (only Pico, in the Azores, surpasses it). It is located in the center of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park.
Serra da Estrela cheese, considered one of the best cheeses in Portugal, is produced in this region, which also has a breed of shepherd dogs, the Serra da Estrela dog.
In relation to tourism, the main attraction of this mountain is the occurrence of snow during the winter.
