Santos Sacred Art Museum works in the building of the Old Monastery of São Bento. Founded in 1981, it occupies the architectural complex whose works began on January 1, 1650, annexed to the Church of Our Lady of Desterro, built in 1631. The museum is considered the second most important of the State of São Paulo, within of your specialty. It is divided into ten thematic spaces, organized in coherence with the activities of the former rooms of the Monastery. The current collection has more than 600 (400 on display) sacred and religious pieces from the 16th century, including images such as Saint Catherine of Alexandria, 1540; that of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, by João Gonçalo, a comparable master to Aleijadinho, of great artistic value; and from Santo Amaro, originally from Barra Grande Fortress. In addition, it has valuable paintings, such as those of artist Benedito Calixto; implements; most of the works are of Brazilian origin, from the colonial and imperial periods.

The Santos Sacred Art Museum also has a collection of ritual masks and paintings by renowned non-religious artists, in addition to the “Frei Gaspar” Library, with over four thousand titles, including the rare work “Memories for the History of the Captaincy”. de São Vicente ”from 1793, by the author who names the library. Throughout the collection are scattered artifacts of folk art, others used by the bishops of the diocese of Santos, and crucifixes of the private collection (in silver, wood, ivory and whale bone).
