Plaza San Martín is perhaps one of the areas of the city that has undergone the most transformations in the last four centuries. Until the late seventeenth century, the area was known as 'El Retiro', because there a monk installed his hermitage. In the early eighteenth century, it was a slave market and depot; In 1800, the second and last bullring that Buenos Aires owned was built, which functioned until the ban on bullfighting in 1819. Later, it would house the General San Martín Horse Grenadier Regiment.
Noteworthy are its ancient trees and the elegant surrounding buildings built in the first decade of the twentieth century.
