The temple preserves elements of the seventeenth century in its structure. Behind its baroque façade, the interior holds furniture, images and paintings, with pieces dating back to the 18th century. Fourteen years after having settled in this block, the Company of Jesus concluded in 1675 the first adobe temple dedicated to the Holy Founder of the Order, located next to the work of the school. From 1712, the building was restored under the design of Juan Kraus, based on the existing facade and tower.
The Jesuits Bianchi, Wolff, Prímoli and Weger collaborated in the work. Consecrated in 1734, the church was cathedral between 1775 and 1791, after the expulsion of the Jesuits. In 1816 and 1820, the decisive open councils gathered here, celebrating in 1821 the creation of the university. In 1955, the interior of the temple was intentionally burned during the social revolts.
