Holešovice is situated to the north of the Old Town, in a well delimited space around the Vltava river and marked by the parks of Stromovka and Letná. Incorporated in the city of Prague in the late 19th century, it is worth visiting for its architectural beauty, the collections of its museums and its parks.
The neighborhood is divided into different zones:
Letná does not officially exist as a district (this area is administratively incorporated to Holešovice), but this space located on the hill of the Letná and Stromovka parks, and between the Štrossmayero square and the Sparta football stadium, is known for this name by the Czechs. Its name comes from the Czech word Léto (summer).
This area was for a long time a rural area formed by some houses of the town of Bubna, which no longer exists, except for the small church of St. Clement. In this neighborhood we will find beautiful architectural works from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century: Neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau facades, but mainly modern and functional buildings (the Palace of the Fairs of the 1920s, the Bio Oko cinema, the twin museum buildings techniques and agriculture). We also highlight the elegant pavilion of Exposition 58, created for the Universal Exposition of Brussels and moved to the entrance of the park of Letná.
Behind the neighborhood train station, the lower part of Holešovice looks quite different. The regular structure with wide streets houses old factories that have been transformed into art galleries and offices. A busy and constantly evolving neighborhood where it is easy to see the life and dynamism of contemporary cities.
What to see?
- Those of the parks of Letná and Stromovka, very pleasant stroll places, near the historical center. From Stromovka, you can extend your walk along the banks of the Vltava River, the Troja Castle and the Botanical Garden.
- Veletržní Palác (the "Palace of Fairs"), which houses rich modern and contemporary collections of the National Gallery.
- DOX, a new and very dynamic contemporary art gallery set in the heart of Holešovice.
- Other interesting museums: the interesting Lapidarium collection (collections of sculptures from the 11th to 19th centuries) installed in the right pavilion of the Exhibition Park (Vyštaviště); the National Technical Museum (currently closed to the public).
