The Vila de Marvão is located in the District of Portalegre, Alentejo region and sub-region of Alto Alentejo, located at the top of the Serra do Sapoio, at an altitude of 860 meters.

It is soothes of a municipality with 154,90 km ² of area and subdivided in 4 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north and east by Spain, to the south and west by the municipality of Portalegre and to the northwest by Castelo de Vide.

The village and rugged mountains in which it is located have been inscribed on the list of candidates for UNESCO World Heritage since 2000.

A walk through the cobbled streets of the locality is the best way to get to know Marvão. Lose yourself in the entanglement of streets, alleys and staircases, enjoy the architectural details of the houses, the doors and windows and go up until reaching the square where the Church of Santa Maria is located.

There you can visit the municipal museum, where the sacred art cohabits with the clothes and traditions of other times. A little further up is the castle, where on clean days you can see the Serra da Estrela, Gardunha, São Mamede and the lands of Spain.

After duly enjoying the charms of the locality, take the opportunity to take a short stroll outside the walls. Descend from Largo do Pelourinho to the Villa's Gate, cross the tar road and follow the sidewalk to the Church and Convent of Our Lady of the Star, a building from the XV-XVIII centuries, which housed the Franciscan monks. Frontier to the building is a Manueline cruise, classified as a national monument. Further on you will find the beginning of the sidewalk that has been connecting Marvão to Portagem for centuries and, if you are still not too tired, can give you a nice walk.

Other places worth visiting are the Roman ruins of Ammaia, the Apartadura Dam, the Anta da Granja and the Vidais Archaeological Complex.

For the tourist to find throughout the year in the restaurants of the county the gastronomy and the typical confectionery, several initiatives are promoted such as: "Foods of the Olive Oil - Comeres do Lagar" - takes place at the time of Carnival, in which the restaurants have in their menus the dishes once cooked in the mills, in times of labor. The distance from the sea marked the traditional cuisine of Marvão found in the properties of cod, an alternative to the difficulty of obtaining fresh fish and was the origin of delicious dishes that constitute a kitchen of excellence. Around the cod were born thousand snacks and delicacies of enchantment that now return to the tables of the restaurants adherents, in order to attract the Spanish tourists too. Gastronomic Fortnight of the Chestnut and the Contest of Sweetness with Chestnut, takes place in the week before the Fair of the Chestnut and the week later. Encouraging the use of the chestnut and at the same time confectioning dishes and sweets delicious and very original. As typical confectionery of the county, we also have the "Boleimas" of Apple, the "Fintos or Festa" Cakes, Sweet Rice, among others!

The municipality of Marvão has a markedly Mediterranean climate, characterized by a very strong dry season in the summer, and the precipitation is irregular. Strands exposed to SW have a warmer and drier climate than those exposed to NE, with a colder and wetter climate.
