Frederiksborg Palace (Frederiksborg Slot, in Danish), also known as Frederiksborg Castle, is located in Hillerød, Frederiksborg County, Denmark.
Scandinavia's largest palace, it was built on three islets in Slotssø ("castle lake") by Christian IV of Denmark, between 1560 and 1630, to be a royal residence. Its project is by architect Hans Van Steenwinckel the Elder, considered as the greatest exponent of the Danish Renaissance.
Its name is in honor of King Frederick II of Denmark, and this building symbolizes the might of the Danish absolute monarchy. It was inhabited, in fact, by the Royal Family, consecrated to monarchs when the domains of Denmark extended to Norway.
The palace was destroyed in 1839 by a violent fire, which was later rebuilt. It currently houses the National History Museum of Denmark.
