The islands were inhabited by Indians until the Spanish arrived in 1499. They became Dutch colonies in 1636.
It was at this time that Bonaire began salt production and that to this day is an important part of the island's economy along with tourism.
Visit the salt flats in the southwest part of the island. Are beautiful.
