The structure was erected in 1571 with the function of defending that port and its people, that moved of Alcantarilha to dedicate themselves to the fishing.
Around 1720, inside the fortification, the Chapel of St. Anthony was raised in honor of the patron saint of the fort.
It is classified by IPPAR, as Property of Public Interest since 1978.
The Fort of Santo António da Pedra da Galé, better known today as Fortress of Armação de Pêra, is located in the town of Armação de Pêra, in the District of Faro, Portugal.
