Since October 2005, about 340 Araweté have inhabited two villages: Officially contacted in 1973, the Araweté belong to the Tupi-Guarani linguistic trunk and are classified as hunters and farmers in the dry land forest. The group combines agriculture, especially maize, with hunting, fishing and the collection of forest products. Their material culture and agricultural techniques are considered simple when compared to those of other Tupi-Guarani groups. Ipixuna, the oldest, and Pakañã, newly created. As for the Asurini, the commercial partnership in this area is based on the commercialization of in natura, which will be transformed into the facilities of the indigenous cooperative in the city of Altamira, for sale to cosmetics industry.
