Het Slowaaks Nationaal Museum (Slowaaks: Slovenské národné múzeum) is de belangrijkste instelling die zich richt op wetenschappelijk onderzoek en cultuureducatie op het gebied van museale activiteit in Slowakije. Het begin "hangt samen met het streven van de Slowaakse natie naar nationale emancipatie en zelfbeschikking."
Het hoofdkwartier is gevestigd in Bratislava; Het Slowaaks Nationaal Museum beheert echter 18 gespecialiseerde musea, waarvan de meeste zich buiten de stad bevinden.
Op 11 maart 2012 vernietigde de brand het grootste deel van het dak van het kasteel. Het is onduidelijk wat betreft de hoofdstructuur en de inhoud.
Het Slowaakse Nationale Museum werd opgericht in 1961. Zijn oorsprong ligt in het Matica slovenská Museum en het Museum van het Nationale Huis in Martin, dat de Slowaakse Museology Society ontwikkelde. Het museum was archeologische, etnografische, historische, numismatische, historische kunst, creatieve kunst en natuurwetenschappelijke collecties. Het Slowaakse National Geographic and History Museum werd in 1924 in Bratislava opgericht door de Slowaakse National Geographic and History Museum Society. Het Landbouwmuseum, een afdeling van het Tsjechoslowaakse Landbouwmuseum in Praag, werd hetzelfde jaar in Bratislava opgericht. In 1940 werden het Slowaakse National Geographic and History Museum en het Landbouwmuseum samengevoegd tot het Slowaakse Museum. In 1961 werden het Slowaakse museum en het Slowaakse nationale museum in Martin samengevoegd tot het Slowaakse nationale museum in Bratislava.
Het Slowaaks Nationaal Museum is de belangrijkste instelling voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek en cultuureducatie, met de grootste en beste collecties op museologisch gebied in Slowakije. Het museum is ook gewijd aan wetenschappelijk onderzoek en uitgeverijactiviteiten. Bovendien is de SNM "een coördinatie-, methodologisch, professioneel advies-, statistisch, educatief en informatiecentrum voor het hele veld van de museologie in de Slowaakse Republiek.
Het hoofdkantoor van het Slowaaks Nationaal Museum bevindt zich in Vajanské nábrežie (een rivierfrontstraat in de oude binnenstad van Bratislava), samen met het natuurhistorisch museum. De constructie van het gebouw, ontworpen door architect M. M. Harminec, begon in juli 1925 en werd voltooid in 1928. Het museum opende op 4 mei 1930.
